Comment (by vierlex):

 also i found a very interesting mediawiki plugin!

 it's called 'bad behaviour' and i already poked some people about it.

 how it works you can read here:
 http://bad-behavior.ioerror.us/about/

 To summarize it somewhat, bad behaviour is a php script which does crazy
 stuff to identify bots by their behaviour/origin and not by their content
 that they are posting (cause thats slow)

 The php scripts are generic enough so that one is able to port them to
 different applications. Plugins exist for the following:
 * drupal
 * wikipedia
 * vBulletin
 * Joomla (though i think they kicked it cause of licensing issues)
 * dokuwiki
 * wordpress

 Taken from the readme of the dokuwiki plugin (dont know why they dont post
 this on their official website), some noteable websites are mentioned:

 {{{
 Thousands of sites large and small, like SourceForge, GNOME, the U.S.
 Department of Education, and many more, trust Bad Behavior to help reduce
 incoming link spam and malicious activity.
 }}}

 also of note is this URL: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Anti-spam_features
 which describes how to use bad behaviour and project honeypot (which also
 sounds like a good idea) TOGETHER so it's more effective.

 like the name suggests, project honeypot deploys decoys for spiders and
 crawlers and records their ip and stuff, more on this here:
 http://www.projecthoneypot.org/faq.php

 and another thing is the AbuseFilter extensions, which allows to, for
 instance, ban a user when he does certain things in a certain time frame.
 this depends heavily on admins to finetune the rules, cause spambot
 behaviour can change too.

 well that should do it no?
