Games Culture Circle: Fuck the Magic Circle. Do we need Game Ethics!? http://codedcultures.com/post/gamesculturecircle http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=121524934610924 Datum: Freitag 30. Johan Huizinga, der den Begriff geprägt hat, bezeichnete ihn als „the arena, the card-table, the temple, the stage, the screen, the tennis court, the court of justice, etc, are all in form and function play-grounds, i.e. forbidden spots, isolated, hedged round, hallowed, within which special rules obtain“. Für Gregory Bateson waren dies "messages of the frame-setting type". This is not a game. Itʼs life. -- Mag. Art. Jumio and HTML/CSS/Javascript Pro
by thomas willomitzer 28 Sep '11

28 Sep '11

Dear Metalab, Sorry to bother you with a boring skill request ... I'm currently looking for a somebody who's skilled in HTML/CSS/Javascript to help us out at Jumio.com (working in Vienna or Linz). Since most members of this list are probably not interested in a "normal" job I'd like to add: It's quite an exciting project and there are a lot of areas that are probably of interest for people on this list. So getting into Jumio (pls Google) opens a window into "advanced" image processing in C++ and AS3 if HTML/CSS isn't the only area you are interested in! On the other hand - maybe you know somebody who you could refer to me? Thanks Thomas CTO Jumio http://www.xing.com/profile/Thomas_Willomitzer P.S. I'd also like to mention that Jumio is in an early startup phase and Share Options are allocated generously - next to salary of course.

Job: Looking for Django developer
by Flo Ledermann 28 Sep '11

28 Sep '11

Hi all, for a new London-based startup I am looking for a web developer familiar with Python and the Django framework. Additional experience in at least one of these fields would be a plus: - DevOp / Web Operations experience (Keywords: DB Optimization, Backups, Monitoring, asynchronous task processing (Celery), ...) - Facebook and 3rd party API integration (FB Apps, FB "page" apps, Twitter, Foursquare, Google+ APIs) and an interest to push these to the limits. - Frontend design/development skills (Image manipulation & optimization, CSS, JQuery, JQuery UI) For the remainder of the year work will be based in Vienna on a weekly service contract basis (not necessarily full-time). Payment will be between EUR 1.200,- and 1.800,- per week, depending on how your experience fits into the project (but you can also try to convince us that you are worth much more). For next year a lot of other options are possible depending on the outcome of the initial prototype phase. To apply, email me personally with an informal introduction and links to samples of your previous work (in English or Deutsch). If you have any questions, feel free to ask! Flo Ledermann

Coded Cultures Festival 2011: Programm 2.Woche
by Matthias Tarasiewicz 27 Sep '11

27 Sep '11

Vom 21. *Offene Plätze bei Workshops*: Martin Howse: Viennese Symptoms / This.Play Space / 28.09, 12:00 - 18:00 Activities will include the dowsing, scrying and divining of buboes on the skin of the city, the rubbing, tracing and excavation of these sites (inscription and playback of the stone tape using self-built apparatus) towards the collective production of a strange hybrid of archaeologists/ forensics report, an essay in self-observation and social questionnaire. http://codedcultures.com/post/viennese-symptoms Gordan Savicic/ Danja Vasiliev: The 120days of *buntu / This.Play Space / 30.09, 12:00 - 18:00 The 120days of *buntu is a mash-up of 120 different Ubuntu operating systems (OS). It works from the source code of popular Linux/GNU and redistributes modified software through the Internet and through a new distribution model, the so called Street-Sneaker-Net inspired by the illegal CD/DVD sellers in the streets of São Paolo, Brazil. Computer operating systems are imposing many rules and dogmas onto the ordinary user; thus an OS becomes an inescapable device of our control-driven social environment. By breaking and modifying the rules, we can liberate ourselves and discover new facets of pre-determined paths, similar to strategies practiced in situationism within urban environments. We envision the operating system as a contemporary replacement of urban space. The systems we are creating are reflections of life situations and desktop-user experiences within the genre of software art. They comprise a collection of idiosyncratic but useless distributions. While default systems impose ever more rules and dogmas, making them similar to increased control over public space, the project emphasizes that they are open to modification, reuse and public action. The 120days of *buntu incorporates the production and distribution of a user-determined OS. Each OS is a self-contained Live CD/USB stick; a PC/Mac can be instantly booted off it. These OS interventions are being brought back into the physical space, given away for free and distributed in the city. http://codedcultures.com/post/120daysof *TALKS IN DER 2.WOCHE* Armin Medosch: Technopolitics / Urania / 27.09.2011<http://codedcultures.com/post/technopolitics> Technopolitics is a praxis oriented research project initiated by Brian Holmes and Armin Medosch. It is a self-educational project which works out a theoretic framework and vocabulary that makes complex and difficult concepts accessible to cultural producers and activists such as themselves. technopolitics@thenextlayer: http://www.thenextlayer.org/node/1199 http://codedcultures.com/post/technopolitics dérive: INCUBATE! / Urania / 28.09.2011, 19:00 - 23:00<http://codedcultures.com/post/incubate!> Large parts of the industrials areas, ports or railway sites lost their functions and orphaned. During the last years many of them disappeared and became residential areas, business parks and the like. But there are still numerous sites that await a new function. The need for cheap, extraordinary space for people nowadays called „creative class“ and the rising importance of the „creative industries“ increased the attention for those old industrial sites. http://codedcultures.com/post/incubate! Findeisen/ Zimmermann: Future Fluxus / Urania / 29.09.2011, 19:00 - 23:00<http://codedcultures.com/post/futurefluxus> The project Future Fluxus is an experiment on many layers of cultural memory. Like it should be, one should add, if it is true that, in many European countries, and since at least 1995, we have been fed back by diverse forms of online cultures that, so it is said and believed, actually, are developing 4-8 times faster than analogue cultures. Are we to be scared now? http://codedcultures.com/post/futurefluxus A.Maze: Games Culture Circle / Urania / 30.09.2011, 19:00 - 23:00<http://codedcultures.com/post/gamesculturecircle> Since 2009, “A MAZE.” presents the talk show “Games Culture Circle” (GCC) in cooperation with the Computer Games Museum in Berlin. Moderated by Uke Bosse, it offers a forum and meeting place for artists, game designers, musicians, directors and players from the media and cultural landscape and discusses interdisciplinary topics of digital game culture in front of an open-minded audience. It is not our aim to produce academic jibber-jabber, but to create an authentic exchange of experiences, opinions and visions. The interplay between computer games and society is more important than previously assumed: games influence works of contemporary fine arts, cinema and music, and more over the behaviour of many people in everyday life. http://codedcultures.com/post/gamesculturecircle *Programm:* http://codedcultures.com/page/program http://codedcultures.com/press/coded_cultures_2011_program.pdf http://codedcultures.com/press/codedcultures2011.ics

OSS - Rechtliches Consulting gesucht
by Christian Benke 23 Sep '11

23 Sep '11

Hi!
by Christopher Clay / c3o 21 Sep '11

21 Sep '11

[Gerne auch weiterleiten! Danke.] * JavaScript platform engineer You can not just use your favorite JavaScript frameworks and libraries, but are skillful and confident enough to create your own? Help us build up a developer-friendly framework for client-side "app" development, including support for the latest and greatest HTML5 technologies (web workers, local storage, etc), multitouch UI, internationalization, templating etc. Benefits: Demonstrated experience writing libraries other people depend on, experience with Backbone.js and other emerging client-side frameworks. CoffeeScript fans welcome. This position is full-time in Vienna. You will be a core team member, shaping the future of the company as an equal with the founders. If you're open to moving to Silicon Valley in the future, all the better. * JavaScript/HTML5 app developer Are you excited about all the new, rich ways to display and interact with information in browsers? Develop new beautiful, interactive, touch-ready visualizations of multimedia data for our users or extend existing ones, using our own JavaScript framework (making improvements and fixing bugs there along the way) as well as client-side framework(s) of your choice. If you've already played around (or are itching to do so) with bleeding-edge client side tech like CSS transitions, 3D transformations, HTML5 video and audio or WebGL, this job is for you. Benefits: Excellent CSS skills, a sense of design and user-friendly UI, experience with developing for mobile browsers This position may be full-time, part-time or project-based. Remote work possible, but local presence preferred. * Scaling consultant Are you a proven expert at scaling popular web apps? Do you know how to make systems with lots of moving parts support hundreds of thousands of users? Do you have experience with replicating Postgres databases and planning virtualized environments, distributed file systems, cloud-hosted architectures and everything else that modern web apps require? You will be responsible for overseeing our system architecture, taking our setup to the next level and managing an infrastructure budget. This position is part-time or project-based. Remote work possible. * Operations generalist You will be looking after our rack full of servers, making incremental infrastructure changes to improve speed and uptime while our userbase grows, as well as suggesting architecture changes and infrastructure upgrades for the future. You'll need to move terabytes of data around and administrate a dozen servers running Debian Linux, working with technologies like OpenVZ, Postgres, Apache2, Nginx, Git, GlusterFS, Memcache, Varnish, Redis, Ruby, Python, Beanstalk, Puppet, God, Exim,… While you don't need to have experience with all of these technologies, familiarity with concepts like virtualization, load balancing, automated deployment, caching, backups, monitoring, streaming replication etc. is required, as is multi-year Linux sysadmin experience in general. This position is part-time in Vienna and includes on-call duty. - - - Soup (http://soup.io, http://soup.me) is a developer-driven, freshly- funded, growing startup. You'll be joining a team of three working with agile processes in a tight development cycle. While you will have to be flexible and ready to take on responsibility and get stuff done, we promise not to bother you with multi-page specifications, interfering clients or pointy-haired bosses. Full-time employees are paid competitively, guided by the standard "Kollektivvertrag" contracts (full benefits). We're located in a hip coworking space in Vienna, though at least a partial future move to Silicon Valley is likely. You are not required to speak German, but your English should be adequate for elaborate technical discussions, knowledge transfer and documentation. General advantages: - Familiarity with the current version of Soup.io as a user - Activity in open source projects, user groups, hacker communities, etc. - Startup affinity, familiarity with the "lean startup" methodology, metrics-driven development, agile development practices, etc. - Marketing or SEO skills - Immediate availability We ♥ diversity: Members of groups underrepresented in the tech scene will be given precedence. Please don't hesitate to apply. To apply, email team(a)soup.io. No need for formalities, provide a personal introduction and links to your work instead. We're applying to you as much as you are applying to us: Feel free to ask any questions you can think of. -- Christopher Clay Founder, http://soup.me Tel: +43 676 770 17 84 - Skype: c3oorg - Jabber: hello(a)c3o.org http://www.linkedin.com/in/christopherclay - http://twitter.com/c3o

[ANN] Devops Meetup - 27.09, 19:00
by Maciej Pasternacki 20 Sep '11

20 Sep '11

Hi, Summer season passed low on devops events, and most of September I've been (and still am) out of Vienna; let's reboot on first Tuesday of autumn, a week from today! Tuesday, 27.09, 19:00, Metalab library - next Devops meetup. I can speak a bit about git-flow, a successful branching model and the associated tool, maybe discuss how/whether to use branching & merging with configuration management. This probably won't be very long, so if you've got anything to show/present, please do so. See you next week! -- Maciej
