For a one-way trip, consider asking a bicycle store for an empty shipping box.
They are made of sturdy cardboard, easily disposable at the destination, and
usually free to have since the stores usually need to get rid of them anyway.

The only drawback is that they are usually not a little less compact than 'true'
bike bags or hard cases.
