Comment:

 That is fixed. And to document it somewhere: it prepends a null character
 before the text, which would stop curl from printing to stdout. Cutting
 the null character fixes things:

 curl -s http://metafridge.metalab.at/cgi-bin/get_text.cgi | cut -c 2-
