 Ad 1) There are many links that link to http within our own services which
 all support https (iirc). But you're right, this causes browsers to treat
 the site as mixed SSL hence not display that it is an ssl site at all.
 (Also the metalab.at certificate does not work for www.metalab.at which is
 another kind of issue in regard to our SSL setup.)

 Ad 3) I totally agree. Why can't we host that stuff ourselves? (As much as
 I do like soup.)
 We could install an OpenPhoto instance https://github.com/photo/ or get
 something integrated with MOS based on Django. (I'm pretty sure there is
 some photo hosting thingie mostly ready made we could recycle, though I
 haven't checked.)
