Hey, I was wondering if there anyone who might be able to introduce me to the milling machine some time in the next two or three days? Any time from 2 to 11 pm would be fine for me, any time in the next three days. I am trying to make a scaled down milled version of the laser cut dragon sculpture here:http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:24561/#files first out of wood, but then out of aluminum later. The mill at happylab has always got someone using it :(. Maybe I could help a bit to get that mini mill there working, or trade you a nice pretty sculpture, with a beer on the side, in exchange. I am already substantially familiar with CNC machines, if that helps, and helped to design and build one at Open source ecology a couple months ago.

Hi, I'm not the one to give introductions to our CNC, but I can tell you that it's using LinuxCNC, and we don't have a CAM software. This means that you have to produce the gcode somehow, either manually (not really possible in this case), or using some software of your own (most support the LinuxCNC-specific gcode commands). If you know about CNCs in general, you can prepare that before you're coming here. You can find our machine-specific limitations and gcode-preamble here: https://metalab.at/wiki/CNC-Fr%C3%A4se You're also going to need the milling tool, since we do not have those in stock here. Hi, I probably can give you a short introduction but the first time i can make it is end of the next week... As Andreas already said, you should have existing gcode, because we do not have any CAM software available. There are some freeware tools like HeeksCAM, and ones you can try for some period like CamBAM (which should be a pretty solid software but i never had the time to test it) We have some endmills in the lab, but there are only a few and the size of the cutting edge is quite small (like 5mm max). if you need deeper pockets you need your own stuff. there are also no round mills in the lab. the maximum shaft we can put into the spindle is 8mm, but everything <6mm fits best in the machine. I took a look at the thing you want to do, maybe you can even use SolveSpace for that. It can produce gcode from outlines... By the way: if you find a good solution to generate gcode from dxf files please tell us! On Wed, Aug 20, 2014 at 10:47:07PM +0200, Andreas Monitzer wrote:
